The Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale (MAIS3+) definition is used to identify and categorise serious road injuries, which is important for research, data collection, and intervention strategies in road safety. The European Commission adopted the MAIS3+ definition to harmonise the counting of serious injuries across member states. Collecting MAIS3+ data on serious road traffic injuries presents challenges including underreporting, misreporting, and a lack of standardised methods across different countries, making it difficult to accurately monitor and compare road safety performance.
This webinar will explain the importance of gathering injury data based on the MAIS3+ injury scale in the context of global targets for road injury reduction. It will provide examples of good practice, advice on how to harmonise police and health data, and suggestions for improving injury data collection.
The webinar will be chaired by Tamar Sulukhia and Emma MacLennan, EaP RSO Technical Secretariat, with opening words from the European Commission and World Bank.
