

This session offers a practical overview of how road authorities can keep their networks safe, durable, and cost-effective through smarter maintenance and infrastructure safety management. Drawing on international experience, it explains the shift from reactive, “worst-first” repair toward proactive, data-driven road asset management, and examines the strategies, tools, contracts, and technologies that make this shift possible. The webinar then links maintenance to road safety outcomes through the procedures of EU Directive 2019/1936 – road safety audits, road safety inspections, and network safety management – and illustrates the approach with Lithuania’s road maintenance reform. Together these perspectives show how future-ready roads depend on combining sound engineering, stable funding, and evidence-based decision-making.
