News | First EaP RSO quarterly webinar focuses on Innovative and AI-Based Solutions for Traffic Safety

Category: Webinar
Published on: April 29, 2025

On 25 April, we launched the first in a new series of quarterly webinars for National Data Coordinators across the EaP RSO member countries —focusing on a timely and high-priority topic: innovative and AI-driven solutions for traffic safety.

This theme was chosen based on feedback from the countries themselves, following our initial stakeholder missions last year to Armenia, Georgia, and Moldova. During those visits, the need for advanced digital tools to improve road safety data collection and visualisation emerged as a shared priority—especially as many countries are actively upgrading their data systems.

Led by our Expert Data Consultant, Egidijus Skrodenis, the two-hour webinar explored the transformative role of artificial intelligence in road safety. Topics included AI applications in traffic monitoring and crash analysis, predictive modelling for crash prevention, and real-time data processing systems.

The session highlighted the wide-ranging benefits AI offers for enhancing traffic safety and its potential to reshape the entire transport landscape. At the same time, participants engaged in thoughtful discussion on key implementation challenges, such as cybersecurity concerns and hardware availability.

Drawing on his experience in Lithuania, Egidijus shared practical examples of how smart infrastructure and digital tools have been successfully integrated into road safety management systems to reduce crash risks.

This topic aligns closely with the Global Plan for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, which calls for the adaptation of innovative technologies as a core component of the Safe System approach. Given the rapid evolution of AI in recent years, it’s a theme we’re certain to explore further in future discussions.
